A highly visible symbol of power, San Vigilio Castle has for centuries been the residence of the various rulers who have succeeded one another in Bergamo. Situated 496 meters high on the hill that gives it its name, it towers over the Upper City, which is why in the past it served a strategic function in case of enemy attacks.

It is located in Bergamo, in the upper part of the city. It is one of the large buildings in Piazza Duomo, leaning against and close to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. The exterior is very well maintained, but the most beautiful part is definitely the interior with the golden color that gives light to the whole church

The medieval Città Alta, surrounded by 16th-century Venetian walls, is dominated by the Rocca di Bergamo. Enchanting squares host the arcade of the Palazzo della Ragione and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, with its gilded interiors and the intricate marble facade of the Colleoni Chapel. Porta Nuova is a monumental gateway of the city of Bergamo. It was built in the Neoclassical style in 1837, on the occasion of Ferdinand I of Austria's entry into the city, on an earlier 1828 design by architect Giuseppe Cusi, who was assisted in its construction by Ferdinando Crivelli.

Very characteristic is the funicular railway from lower Bergamo to the magnificent Upper Town, not to be missed if you are visiting Bergamo!

Symbol of Varenna, worth visiting is the botanical garden from which one can admire of a breathtaking view of Lake Como and the promontory of Bellagio

Just a few minutes by car or train from Varenna is the Bellano Gorge, a natural gorge carved by the Pioverna stream that can be visited by footbridges
